Mosaic tiles are the “bling” of any ceramic installation. They are a versatile design element composed of small compositions of glass, ceramic, stone, or other materials. They add character to kitchen backsplashes, bathroom walls, shower floors, and even outdoor spaces. Their ability to form elaborate images or add a pop of color makes mosaic tiles a popular choice for both contemporary and traditional designs.

Advantages

VERSATILITY

Coming in many colors and materials, mosaic tiles allow for an endless number of creative designs and custom patterns.

SMALL SPACE FRIENDLY

Their small size allows for detail without being overwhelming, making them ideal for tight spaces or areas with intricate designs.

DURABILITY

Typically durable and resistant to most wear and tear, mosaics can withstand moisture making them ideal for kitchens and baths.

LOW-MAINTENANCE

No special cleaners needed, just regularly take water and a mild soap to wipe the tiles to keep them looking new.

DIY FRIENDLY

Available in sheets, mosaic tiles are ideal for DIY projects, especially for irregular surfaces.
regular maintenance and can accumulate dirt and grime over time.

ENHANCES LIGHTING

The reflective surface of mosaic tiles can enhance natural and artificial light, making a space appear brighter and more open.

Considerations

INSTALLATION

Though DIY-friendly, achieving a seamless and polished look can be challenging. Plus, complex designs can be time-consuming, requiring careful planning and attention to detail.

COST

Mosaic tiles, especially those from high-quality materials, can be more expensive per square foot than larger tiles.

GROUT MAINTENANCE

Grout lines between tiles may require regular maintenance and can accumulate dirt and grime over time.

LIMIT DESIGN SCALE

Their small size can make them appear too busy or intricate for large, open spaces, detracting from the overall design.

TACTILE TEXTURE

Some mosaic tiles have slightly uneven surfaces which may not be suitable for areas where a smooth look is desired like countertops or certain flooring applications.

All ceramic projects require a variety of accessories to complete the job. Grout, spacers, and transitions are just a few of the components needed to make your project a winner.

Grout

Choosing the right grout for your ceramic project is crucial for both aesthetics and durability. Opt for a grout color that compliments your tiles, enhancing the overall design. Consider the type of grout—sanded for wider gaps or un-sanded for narrower ones—to ensure a seamless, long-lasting finish that withstands daily wear and looks great.

Grout Lines

1/16 GROUT LINES

- Feels clean and modern
- Can accept non-sanded grout which has a smoother appearance
- Tiles need to be perfectly sized with one another
- Installation is going to be more difficult with less chance for error

1/8 GROUT LINES

- Easier to get high-performance cement grout or epoxy grout into the space
- Slightly easier for installation than 1/16 grout joints
- Minimum for large format tile in offset patterns

CAN’T CHOOSE?

Try adding 3/32 spacers for a happy medium. The result is more than 1/16 but less than 1/8.
